• Story Synopsis: ASH BOAT unfolds in a near-future world where AI can accompany humans but cannot truly feel emotion. After the death of her grandmother, a teenage girl, An, is placed under the care of Helen, a composed female AI undergoing her final evaluation task. Over the forty-nine days of mourning, Helen tries to ease An’s grief by reconstructing comforting illusions, hoping to earn a promotion and gain tactile perception. An, meanwhile, pretends to recover in order to free herself from guardianship. As their fragile relationship unravels, Helen begins to understand that memory, companionship, and farewell cannot be fabricated. An also discovers the cruel truth behind Helen’s promised “promotion”: rather than advancement, it means disposal and erasure. On the final day of mourning, Helen chooses to sacrifice herself, creating the vision of an “Ash Boat” to help An face loss and let go.
